History of bookmarks

The word "signet" is a diminutive of "signe" in french (sign in english) and comes from the latin word signum (signature, seal, stamp, mark, signing). Originally used as a seal to sign and seal a letter in the XIIIth century, the XVIIIth century bookmark was made out ivory and parchment on which was written a message.

In the same spirit, we replaced the parchement by a subject symbolizing the message to be carried through a range of 300 different bookmarks models.

Manufacturing the bookmarks

The bookmark stick is made of cooked and stamped brass. The subjects are carved in tin and welted to the brass stick. The whole bookmark is then covered with gold (24 carats) after being initially copper and nickel-plated. The terminal phase of the production consists in old fashion polishing, realised with essence and "ivory black" oil painting. Length of stem : 14,5 cm.

The production of Signet d'Art bookmarks is 100 % french and is patented in 67 countries worldwide. Signet d'Art has been chosen by "Metiers d'art de France" (France art crafts) and its metal bookmarks are shown on great museums like the Louvre and the Château de Versailles.

We wish you a pleasant use of your art bookmarks and wonderful readings.
